Ward’s Island: Best Place to Escape the City in Toronto

If you have read our previous article on Centre Island, you probably have seen Ward’s Island there. It is one of the islands in the Toronto Islands archipelago and is famous for being the most residential one.

Welcome to Ward’s Island, where the houses have more character than a Shakespearean play and the streets are as narrow as a catwalk during Fashion Week! If you’re tired of the chaos of city life, hop on over to this funky little paradise where pedestrians and cyclists take the throne.

Ward's Island Best Place to Visit in Toronto

How to Get in There?

Similar to the route of Centre Island, you can take the Ward’s Island ferry from Toronto Ferry Docks. The Ferry Docks is only a 10-minute walking distance from Union Station. The round trips cost around $9.11. But again, if you are looking for an adventure for the whole day, you can come to Ward’s Island by going to Hanlan’s Point or Centre Island first. Centre Island, as the name suggests, is the center of all fun while Hanlan Point is a clothing-optional beach.

Like Centre Island, you can also book Water Taxi rides to Ward’s Island. While Water Taxi rides cost more than ferry, this is the extra price you pay for a peaceful experience away from the crowd.

Things to do on Ward’s Island

Now that you are already on the island, it’s time to begin the fun. While there are tons of things you can do on the island, we picked some of the best for you.

As I have already said, the island is heaven for pedestrians and cyclists. There are pedestrians and cycle-only streets all around the island. So, the first thing you should do is take a relaxing walk or hop on a cycle to look around the island.

Feeling sporty? Swing by the 18-hole Disc Golf Course at the western end of the island. Who needs golf carts when you can fling frisbees across abundant green fairways?

But wait, there’s more! Hold your partner’s hand and take a gentle walk down the old-fashioned boardwalk, where you can soak up some sun at Ward’s Island Beach or sneak a peek at the back gate of Riviera Cafe. Psst, rumor has it their patio is so lovely, even the seagulls fight over a spot!

So, whether you’re in the mood for a round of disc golf or just want to chill by the beach, Ward’s Island has got you covered. Just watch out for wayward frisbees and seagull squabbles!
